‘The Club is sleepwalking towards an ugly accident'

By STFC writer Sam Morshead

Interim Town head coach Gavin Gunning

Never wake a sleepwalker

At some point in time, all of us have been whispered this generational mistruth.

“It’s a bad idea,” we’ve been told. “They could react badly, lash out, slip or fall”.

All of this could happen, of course. But certain circumstances demand certain action.

Giving Uncle Eric a gentle nudge before his unconscious mistakes the airing cupboard for the upstairs loo would be unlikely to cause him psychological trauma, for example, but it would avoid the need for recarpeting.

Swindon Town, for the purpose of this crude metaphor, is Uncle Eric. And the club is sleepwalking towards an ugly accident.

Defeat by Doncaster Rovers on Saturday left the Robins 19th in League Two. They have won once in 10 matches, and twice in 14 in 2024. They require 14 points from seven games to avoid recording the club’s worst Football League return, having taken 15 matches to pick up their most recent 14.

This squad, and those who have put it together, are not only going to clear the so-called Beamish Line (the club’s worst league finish), they are going to saunter under it with all the free-wheeling flexibility of a Trinidadian limbo dancer.

And yet, things stay the same.
