There is a role for each of us in shaping the planet inherited by future generations
This is the latest of our new monthly environmental columns by Rebecca Clements, who has a passion for writing, community and all things Swindon.

As climate change accelerates, biodiversity declines, and natural resources dwindle, the need for collective action has become more important than ever.
Each and every one of us, if we choose, can play a role in protecting our planet for future generations, and by joining together as individuals, local communities, groups and organisations, and local businesses, our collective action becomes far greater. When it comes to making a positive change, our unity truly becomes our strength.
By working together we can adopt and practice more sustainable practices, support environmental policies and raise awareness. Together we can create a powerful movement, which will make a truly positive difference when it comes to our planet and its future.
How can we do this?
Wiltshire and Swindon Climate and Environment Summit
Here in Wiltshire, a two-day Climate and Environment Summit is set to to take place on Friday 20 June and Saturday 21 June.
The summit, which has been organised by Wiltshire Council and Wiltshire Climate Alliance on a not-for-profit basis and endorsed by Swindon Borough Council, will be business-focused on the first day and community-focused on the second day.
For local businesses
On Friday 20 June, local businesses are invited to join together to share their thoughts and experiences on what works and what doesn’t when aiming to reach net zero, as well as hearing from Wiltshire Council and other organisations about their carbon reduction challenges and successes. There will also be an opportunity for local businesses to learn more about how to protect and grow their organisation, whilst also adapting to climate change, with an important focus on new sources of finance and funding models available.
It is great to see that Swindon-based Nationwide Building Society are playing a key role in the summit by delivering a presentation of offices, buildings and infrastructure. This is following Nationwide’s partnership with Swindon Borough Council, which saw 239 brand new homes being built on a derelict brownfield site. Oakfield Homes, located in Marlowe Avenue in Walcot, have been built with a real focus on energy efficiency, with an EPC A rating (Energy Performance Certificate), solar panels to generate electricity and air source heat pumps instead of gas boilers.
